How to Check your PVC Size
Measuring PVC pipes can be a challenging task, but you can accurately identify the right PVC pipe for your project by following the tips provided below.
How to Measure PVC Pipe
PVC pipe sizes are determined by the "ID" or Internal Diameter of Schedule 40 pipes. In simpler terms, this means that the size of a standard Schedule 40 PVC pipe is defined by the measurement of the inner "hole" of the pipe, which extends from the top to the bottom of the inside of the PVC pipe.
A common mistake is when people measure the Outside Diameter (OD) of their PVC pipe and mistakenly consider it as the PVC pipe size. This is incorrect and can lead to purchasing a pipe that is larger than needed.
To accurately determine the size of your PVC pipe, you can follow these steps:
- Read the Manufacturer Markings: Check for manufacturer marks on the side of the pipe.
- Measure the OD and ID: Then compare your measurements with the provided chart below.
- Download our PVC Pipe Dimensions Reference: You can also refer to our PVC Pipe Dimensions Reference for further assistance.
By following these steps, you can ensure that you correctly identify the size of your PVC pipe and avoid purchasing the wrong size for your project.
1. Read the Manufacturer Markings
If you've purchased PVC pipe from a hardware store, you can easily determine its size by examining the markings on the side of the pipe. These markings are typically located near the manufacturer's name and will indicate the size in either decimal or fractional form, such as '1.25' (for 1-1/4 inches) or "3/4" (for 3/4 inch), as examples. Make sure to use this size information when you're ordering fittings or accessories for your PVC project.
However, in the case of Pipeworks Structural Grade PVC pipe, it is not labeled with size markings. In this situation, you'll need to measure the pipe yourself to determine its size. Please refer to the instructions below for guidance on how to accurately measure the Pipeworks Structural Grade PVC pipe.
